Facelifts have improved over the decades from maximum scarring to close to no scarring at all.  The initial idea of a facelift was to just tighten the skin; advancements on the procedure now put more emphasis on rejuvenating the ageing face for a more youthful look.

A Facelift can be down in conjunction to other surgical operations like Eyelid surgery and non-surgical procedures such as Botox, Liposuction and Gel injections.  A Facelift aims to correct the effects of ageing which include changes in skin quality (wrinkles, lines, and pigmentory changes), loss of facial volume, droopiness and weakened support structures (visible bulges eyelids).

Candidates should be in their late 40’s or 50’s, must be in good health and be non-smokers and they should definitely want to look younger.  The operation is performed under intravenous sedation or light general anesthetic.  The duration of the operation depends on how many other surgeries are being performed on you, on average it could be 3 to 4 hours.  The pain felt is uncomfortable but phases out over days.  The Eden Institute of Plastic and Cosmetic surgery specializes in procedures like these and more.Incisions are first made along the sideburn area, then to the front of the ear and lastly in the ear groove.

The incisions are well hidden, minimizing the appearance of scars.  Through the incisions, the skin of the cheek is lifted to expose deeper (sagging) tissue (SMAS).

The deeper tissue is then re-elevated to a more youthful position.  Liposuction is on the neck will be to remove excess skin under the chin area and to tighten the sagging skin around the neck region.  The SMAS is then re-elevated, excess neck skin will be obvious, but will eventually be trimmed and inset to its original incision.  Fat could be injected in some areas of the face like the cheeks and lips, gels may also be used.  At the end large supportive dressings and a face band will be applied to support the re-elevated tissue.

Before and after pictures are proof that a Facelift is worthwhile. Drains to remove any excess fluids may be placed.  Risks linked to a Facelift procedure include bleeding and uncommon bleeding.  Recovery period is short, the dressings and drains will be removed a day after the operation.  You will have to wear elastic face bands, for 2 weeks at the least, to help stabilize neck contour and limit any swelling.  It will take a few months to see the expected end result so be patient.

In Canada expect to pay from $6000 to $12000 CAD and in the UK,  £4200 to £5800
